Tim Painter

After a distinguished academic and athletic career at Yuma High School, Tim went to Arizona Western and NAU, earning his teaching degree in 1968. He began teaching and coaching at Coconino High School soon after and took on statistic duties for the football team in 1969, expanding to other sports thereafter, using students in his Stat Crew. His use of local media, especially the Arizona Daily Sun and KEOS radio, kept the community informed about Coconino Athletics for generations.

1984 Flagstaff High School Football

Coached by Rick Smith, the '84 Eagles posted a record of 9-2-1 and beat the Peoria Panthers in the Class AA title game, 7-0. This was the program's fourth consecutive championship game win, a state record at the time. The team featured David Winsley, who would become Arizona's all-time leading rusher upon graduation.

Russell Woods

A graduate from Coconino High School and Arizona State University, Russell's claim to fame comes through Flagcoco, where he celebrates the Flagstaff-Coconino rivalry, "the best high school rivalry in Arizona". He accomplishes this through social media, online publications, and various awards.

Stan Townsend

Coach Townsend was the original head coach for Coconino High School Boys' Basketball. After gaining his Masters from NAU in 1960, he began teaching and coaching at Flagstaff Junior High School. He started the Panther Basketball program in 1967, and by 1973, he led the Panthers to their only state championship after the 1972-1973 season. All told, he notched over 300 wins as a coach in Flagstaff.

Larry Johnson

Larry led the Eagles in scoring and steals as Flagstaff High School's Boys' Basketball went 25-0 and won the Class AA state championship in 1974-1975. After a standout collegiate career at Mesa and NAU, he made his mark in coaching at Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas, guiding the Desert Shield to three title games, winning in 2003. He was Nevada Coach of the Year in 2001.

Paul Hubbard

A graduate from Flag High's Class of '49, Paul lettered in four sports and was Captain of Eagles Baseball's first-ever team. Among other activities in his very-busy high school years was President of the Ski Club, where he began skiing competitively at the age of 14. After his enlistment in the US Navy during the Korean War, Paul got his degree at NAU and devoted his adult life to teaching the youth of Flagstaff while also playing golf all over the world.
